If you've been following or been a fan of electric bicycles for a while, you may be aware that the law changed in 2016 regarding the assistance of ebikes.
Prior to this you could quite happily buy and ride an ebike without the need for pedalling, just like a motorbike.
2016 saw a change in the UK law which meant ALL electric bicycles had to be pedal assist only and power received limited to 250W, if they were to be ridden on anything other than private land, in other words, your garden is fine but that's about it.
The ebike market blossomed with the development of the mid-drive motor giving exceptional intuitive power delivery when needed, on hills, against the wind etc..which was wonderful for people who are able bodied and have no problem with rotating the pedals.
But what of the rider who has limited movement, or any kind of condition that inhibits pedalling? Well, up until recently, they either had to buy an ebike that is effectively illegal in the U.K, ride a motorcycle, or not ride at all.
Wisper came to the rescue by announcing that you can have one of their models with pedal assist, but with an additional £299 they will take your freshly purchased Wisper ebike to only one of seven DVSA testing stations in the U.K and hey presto, you will have a full 15mph throttle, all legal and above board.
At the time of writing there are only two conditions to this.
1. The bike chosen has to have factory fitted mudguards and lights.
2. You could be in for a slight delay as there is currently a ten week backlog due to popularity.
